About: Please tell us about your self. Some of our programs have benefits for art workers - please tell us if you are an artist and mention the most recent work/venue/space/residency where you have worked/developed your practice.
I am a California born performance artist of varying forms. After moving to New York to pursue acting 6 years ago, I stumbled into a movement class and experienced a cellular revolution--I was AWAKE for the first time! From that point on, I've been reveling in and curiously exploring the sensation of being. I think it might be a doorway to the entire universe.

THE COLLECTIVE

For the 2013-2014 Black Studio Artist Share, I am representing a yet-to-be-named collective of collaborative artists, including

Rachel Broderick, a writer and director. Rachel wrote and directed Antigone Unearthed, which we took to the International New York Fringe Festival in 2012. She is co-founder of Our Ladies, an organization dedicated to nurturing and hosting the work of emerging artists. Our other collaborations include 5 Chairs and Captivated. In the Black Studio Share, she is continuing to develop the process of writing while watching improvised movement, a technique which generates a poetic score for physical performance. She is also working on a novel and solo performance piece inspired by Alexander the Great.

Sebastiani Romagnolo, an actor, dancer, director, choreographer. Sebastiani and I have been collaborating since we spent a summer in Basin, Montana together in 2012. After making a short piece called Beasts in the Bouquet, we began working with video and interactive performance art to create Donde Estamos?, developing the practice of meditation as performance. This year Sebastiani has also performed in La Marie Vison with Kipuka Theater Company and Punch Drunk’s Sleep No More.

Stillness: in biodynamic craniosacral therapy and improvisational performance

“Space and silence are two aspects of the same thing. The same no-thing. They are externalization of inner space and inner silence, which…

Exploring the Unknown through the Unnecessary

Posted on May 10, 2014 at 2:49pm 0 Comments

In her Practice Manual for the Six Viewpoints, Mary Overlie describes the practice of Doing the Unnecessary as “a movement exploration that should be extended to breaking logic of all kinds…performers are permitted to be obstructive, non-cooperative, or minimally cooperative.”

My favorite memory of Mary providing an example of the Unnecessary was at the dinner table in Basin, Montana. We had cooked up some steak and asparagus and potatoes and onions. The sun was setting…

A moment into our journey as we travel further within Mary Overlie's Six Viewpoints Practice Manual.

Of the six materials (space, shape, time, emotion, movement, story), we have documented a foray into…
