About: Please tell us about your self. Some of our programs have benefits for art workers - please tell us if you are an artist and mention the most recent work/venue/space/residency where you have worked/developed your practice.: A pioneer of the alternative opera movement in New York City, Judith Barnes formed Vertical Player Repertory in a Brooklyn storefront in 1998. The company creates ensemble-driven opera theatre in extraordinary venues, among them a factory courtyard on the Gowanus Canal, a maze-like raw space in midtown, the deck of an oil tanker, and the last active shipping port in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

VPR works to create productions that build a community of imaginative thinkers on both sides of the stage. We bring theatrical integrity and an unconventional spirit to an eclectic mix of repertoire, inviting performer and audience alike to re-imagine the possibilities of opera.

In addition to her work as the producing artistic director of VPR, Judith is a performing mezzo soprano, and has worked as an opera stage director and set designer. She teaches classical vocal technique and opera workshops, and is a language coach for singers. She is also a visual artist, working mostly in the media of drawing and ceramics.
