Can Butoh be stagnated?

Yesterday I saw the amazing performance: Crazy Cloud from Ko Murobushi and InkBoat. Thank you Ximena, Shige and Theresa for organizing the Soak festival. It is good to have places where artists from different disciplines can share their work and explorations. What triggered me to start this conversation was the introduction for Soak Festival Ximena gave before this performance. If I understand it correctly she said that butoh is stagnated and needs a kind of explosion or something to evolve….I am curious is this an shared opinion? By opening this conversation I hope to understand better on what this opinion is based. For me I cannot connect Butoh with the word stagnation. I have rarely encountered such a flourishing art form as Butoh. Butoh is like a sprout and needs light to flower. So by exposing Butoh to the public it can evolve like any art. The last 3 years I have seen a lot of performances called Butoh and also I saw a lot of work what is called differently but what I would have also called Butoh. What defines Butoh?  Hijikata wrote in his notebook in his fifties: "We must find the butoh of life. We need to enter into the non-dual world before the separation of self and other. Butoh must sink down into the hidden logic dimension where we associate with the spirits without any intermediaries.”  The words of Hijikata came to me through Rhizome Lee from the Subbody Institute, who also writes that these were the images of Hijikata’s last investigations into Butoh. Hijikata called it the Butoh of life. He had to stop his investigations before it came out into form. Now it is time for us to continue the investigations into the next stage of butoh. What is the butoh of life? Let us find out together.”  This stimulated me to spent one year as a co-researcher in the Himalaya. What I learned and experienced is that Butoh is not self expression at all and that is maybe also the reason why I cannot connect Butoh with the word stagnation. By entering into the subconscious realm we connect with life which is always finding new ways to resonate. Life is always evolving it cannot stagnate. Off course we can feel stagnated but this has nothing to do with Butoh or any other form.

I am curious how do you feel about this? Can Butoh be stagnated?

Hi Natasja,

This discussion made me really think, and I don't know if sharing my thoughts will be helpful, but I did want to respond to what you asked. I did not see this performance and cannot, of course, speak for Ximena or know what she meant. But I do think that yes, butoh can be stagnated. I believe as you do, that the nature of butoh is connecting with life, which is always evolving. I believe butoh is a dance of the spirit, allowing each of us to tap into the universal, to let that universal energy that is in everything flow through us in the way it needs to. If we each allow it, with utmost freedom, then it will not be stagnant. Then butoh will grow and will expand as each of us finds our own butoh, and evolves with it. But I believe that the way butoh can become stagnant is if butoh comes from thought rather than spirit... if a dancer uses certain movements on purpose, or gestures, thinking that it "looks" more like butoh "should" look, then that is stagnant rather than authentic and expansive. There is no one butoh "look".... I believe butoh is meant to evolve, and change with us, if we allow it. It is only if it becomes confined to prescribed, choreographed, set movements, gestures, etc., that it cannot grow as its nature requires. Just my thoughts. :)
