About: Please tell us about your self. Some of our programs have benefits for art workers - please tell us if you are an artist and mention the most recent work/venue/space/residency where you have worked/developed your practice.
Rachel Cohen has created work and performed in New York City since 1997. She graduated from Harvard University in 1995/96 with a degree in "Performance as Communication," a self-designed major. Rachel founded the performance company Racoco Productions/Rx in 2003. The company aims to break the boundaries between the performing and visual arts, exploring objects, materials, and substances and how they interact with the body through movement to illustrate the unseen in a radical confrontation of the corporeal and ethereal. The aim is to literally embody human emotions and acts, making visible the "humors". The body and everyday objects are compared, contrasted, blended, and confused to illustrate the inescapable messiness of existence. The company's 2003 If the Shoe Fits, created with composer Chris Becker and visual artist Agata Oleksiak, was selected as one of The New York Times' 2005 top dance performances in New York City. In 2010, Racoco Productions received a NYFA BUILD Stability grant and a Field Far Space residency. In 2008, the company received a Live Music for Dance grant form the American Music Center fora collaboration with Becker and clay artist Patty Rosenblatt. In 2007, the company was awarded a Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation US Artists International grant to attend the XIV Annual International Contemporary Dance Conference and Performance Festival in Bytom, Poland, with Oleksiak; the company also received a Creative Connections grant from Meet The Composer for a short residency in Brooklyn with Becker.

I was speaking with a friend who observed some of the afternoon, choreographer Elke Rindfleisch, and we marveled at how broad a topic this could be (as was reflected in my convoluted rambling presenting my thoughts!).

I’ll attempt here to lay some of those thoughts out more clearly. Although, one of the changes I see for the future body is potentially greater acceptance of…
