The People Movers
About: Please tell us about your self. Some of our programs have benefits for art workers - please tell us if you are an artist and mention the most recent work/venue/space/residency where you have worked/developed your practice.
The People Movers is a dance and production collaborative led by choreographer & producer Kate Ladenheim. We tell somewhat self-deprecating stories about urgent social, political, and cultural happenings. Our work is urgent, awkward, slightly obsessive, and multidisciplinary - in essence, it’s reflective of the world we live in today. And it carefully implicates ourselves within the culture we ironically critique.

We know performances are not just for stages. They are for warehouses, offices, apartments, phones, social media, daily interactions, for our colleagues, and even for our loved ones. Because of this, we make dances that zoom in on the ways in which people perform their lives and survive in culture, centering our bodies as the receptacles that hold this social conditioning. Our work shows why this way of living is so isolating, so white hipster millennial, so problematic and so endlessly fascinating.

In addition to our own work, The People Movers is committed to raising up the work of other artists. A significant part of its contribution to the field is The People Movers’ production of events and performances featuring artists whose work lives at the cutting edge of performance practice and contemporary cultural critique. We curate and construct tightly curated, impossibly cool, and expertly produced events in unexpected environments.

ESSAY // Measuring the Value of Our Work

Posted on November 16, 2016 at 1:00pm 0 Comments

I randomly stepped into an audition in July of 2016, expecting nothing, with a company that I had no prior relationship with, and two months later found myself getting emailed a contract for second cast of a brand new, ongoing, immersive theater show. I’d be performing multiple times a week. I’d be getting…
