LEIMAY Fellow Feature

A time in the studio with... Kate Ladenheim

  • What is the first thing you do when you begin your rehearsal at CAVE?

The first thing I do is hug my collaborators, and then I lay on the floor.

  • Describe your artistic process, how have weekly rehearsals impacted the way that you work?

Weekly rehearsals, above all, provide consistency to the process. You have four hours and an empty room; how do you make incremental progress with these two tools?

I am a very conceptual creator and I work collaboratively - both cross-disciplinarily and with my performers. We create concept-based experiments and arrange the results of each experiment into narrative context over time. Relationship building and humor are also essential elements in our process.

  • In one sentence, what is at the core of your work? What drives you to create?

Social consciousness is at the core of my work.

  • Discuss your use of the body in your practice...

The body is central to my creative practice. I am deeply interested at the points where gestures become socially and culturally recognizable, and what stories those gestures can tell.

  • Tell me about your first experience with LEIMAY, CAVE, or Ximena and Shige?

I didn't know anything about CAVE until I applied for the LEIMAY Fellowship in 2014 - but I was immediately struck by how Shige and Ximena invest in and support community and sustainability.
