rented bodies dance company
Alyson Wishnousky’s vigorous and animated choreography illustrates a charged physical body to reveal a darkness that is profoundly human. Expressions of desire, sorrow, anger, humor and tenderness represent the body entering catharsis and returning to a neutral state of being. Tension is unleashed as force approaches softness. Alyson is interested in how the body processes experience and regards dance as concrete emotion.
In 2007 Alyson formed rented bodies dance company to focus on her solo choreography. rented bodies’ mandate explores where image, sound and dance collide in performance and video creations in collaboration photographers, videographers and musicians. rented bodies is inspired by popular trends in art, fashion, and culture, and is intrigued by the collective consciousness; the place where the personal meets the universal.
rented bodies and photo/video artist Nikol Mikus joined forces in 2007 to make image and dance collide. Collaborations include linking digital photos of choreography frame by frame to create stop-motion animation videos. They made and screened two videos during an Artist Residency funded by Canada Council for the Arts at CESTA in Czech Republic. Apt 111 (Aug 2009) was filmed in Brooklyn, NYC; Three Little Fits premièred at FAT (April 2010), Toronto’s Alternative Fashion Festival. In 2009 Alyson’s dance solos Perverted Like the Blue Sky and Pop! Bang! were presented at Festival Transatlantique Montréal Quartiers Danse, and The Dance Center, Vancouver. In Perverted Like the Blue Sky a stop-animation video of cartoon-like characters depicting stereotyped personas in society was integrated into the live performance as video projections. For Transatlantique 2010, Alyson will perform a new solo-short, Ghosts of departed quantities, in collaboration with videographer Nikol Mikus a guest musician. Alyson’s solos have been presented in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, New York.
Alyson graduated from Concordia University with a B.F.A. in Contemporary Dance (1998) and pursued a career with Montréal choreographers Isabelle Choinère, Tammy Forsythe, Mary Ann Lacey, touring Europe, South America, Canada. Festivals she participated in are: Montreal High Lights Nuit Blanche, Montréal 2010; Festival Cambalache III, Buenos Aires 2006; Centre des Arts Engheins-les-Bains, Paris 2005; Internationles Festival für Medienkunst, Dresden 2004; Festival International de Nouvelle Danse, Montréal 2003.
