Judson Church is Ringing in Harlem…(M2M) is the custom-made size in theTwenty Looks or Paris is Burning at the Judson Church project. Only, in this made-to-measure size, the proposition is inverted and the central question of the work becomes “What would have happened if one of the early postmoderns from Judson Church had gone uptown to perform in the voguing ballroom scene in Harlem.”

In this new work, co-commissioned by MoMA PS1, Harrell engages the formalism and minimalism of postmodern dance with the flamboyancy and performativity of voguing. Combining these contrasting styles, he repositions the influence of jazz, funk, and rhythm-and-blues on improvisation in early postmodern dance.

Given the recent establishment of dance as a major impetus in contemporary art practice, MoMA PS1 presents an afternoon of lectures and conversations about dance’s prevalence in today’s art discourse, major museums, and the art world at large. The panel will feature Peter Eleey, Trajal Harrell, Jenn Joy, André Lepecki, Mårten Spångberg, and others. The anthology, DANCE, is edited by André Lepecki, for the Documents of Contemporary Art Series, published by Whitechapel Gallery and MIT Press.
