Movement

The Performing Body at Play, Taught by Julia Crockett.

The Performing Body at Play is a workshop in physical technique, ensemble improvisation, and composition designed for movement-based artists of all levels. Calling on a variety of disciplines, including Contact Improvisation, Viewpoints, Michael Chekov work, and the Williamson Technique, instructor Julia Crockett guides participants through an experience of physical discovery that promises to be sweaty, raucous, silly, and personal.

The class will focus on:

  • the performers incorporation of physical vulnerability, creative impulse and collaboration.
  • cultivating awareness and activating the senses
  • uncovering a limitless source of artistic permission and PLAY
  • bringing an expansive, unapologetic instrument into contact with other bodies

Ultimately the artist is exposed to a unique, rigorous, and dynamic level of physical and creative collaboration. Whether you are involving your body daily in a professional creative practice, or simply looking for an artistic outlet, the class will be a treat for your physical instrument!

Cost:  $55.00 per class.  or  $150.00 for 3 classes

Duration:  2 hours

Julia Crockett is a New York based performing artist with a diversity of interests. She is a choreographer, actor, dancer, movement specialist and educator. In her academic and artistic work, she explores the relationship between the body and a performer’s emotional life, specifically the connection between physical freedom and psycho-emotional release. Crockett is the founder of her own movement group and is a 2013-2014 LEIMAY Fellowship recipient. Her work has been featured in numerous galleries and theatrical venues throughout New York City, including the Movement Research Festival at Danspace Project, Capricious 88 Gallery, Jack Chiles, Signal, and Home Alone 2 Gallery. This spring, she played the title role in “A Female Philoctetes” at Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). She now teaches movement based performance and physical technique at Tisch School of the Arts, NYU, and the Maggie Flanigan Studio.
