‘Competition’ presents 3 three-hour durational performance pieces that draw choreographic inspiration from a series of traditional physical competitions and warm-up routines that take place “backstage” within the world of professional dance. The competitions set up systems for measuring physical thresholds and usually take the form of a game. The games are repetitive, abstract and strengthening, and follow strict, yet unstated, rules that get passed corporeally from one generation to the next. The competition outcomes establish, and continuously reaffirm, a social hierarchy that extends beyond the game and directly affects the power dynamic within a “performance.” The choreography will focus on the “preparation” poses and will incorporate the “throwing” of the press-release pamphlets and “scattering” of side-walk salt into the composition. Over the course of the performance the gallery floor will become increasingly covered by paper/salt/sludge and force the choreography to adjust accordingly. When the dancers are not participating in a competition in the main gallery space, they will be warming up in the the front gallery space and visible to those passing by.
