Rite of the Butcher and Requiem- second movement

Rite of the Butcher, created and performed by Ben Spatz, is a visceral fable about the power of fantasy, told by the Butcher—refugee, criminal, shaman—through poetry, martial dance, and folk songs in an invented language. This full-length solo will be followed by Requiem- second movement a new work created and performed by Maximilian Balduzzi.

Ben Spatz is Artistic Director of Urban Research Theater. His work has been seen at Abrons Arts Center, Lincoln Center Rubenstein Atrium, The Living Theatre, Movement Research at Judson Church, the United Solo Festival, and elsewhere. Ben lived in Poland from 2003-2005 as an ensemble performer with the Gardzienice Theatre Company and a Fulbright Fellow at the Grotowski Institute. He is a doctoral candidate in theatre at the City University of New York, where he has also taught introductory and advanced courses in acting and performance. Ben’s writing has been published in both academic and artistic journals. He is a current Artist-in-Residence at Movement Research.

Maximilian is an Italian director, performer, and teacher. From 2003-2008, he worked with director Anne Zenour and Teatro della Pioggia in Siena, creating original works, leading workshops, and organizing a theater festival. During that time he also spent six months in Bali, studying traditional dance and song. In 2008, Maximilian moved to New York City, where he has worked with Ben Spatz, Arturo Vidich, and James Scruggs among others. His work has been seen at Abrons Arts Center, Lincoln Center Rubenstein Atrium, The Living Theatre, Movement Research at Judson Church, HERE Arts Center, Dixon Place, and elsewhere. He is a current Artist-in-Residence at Movement Research.
