Yelena Gluzman makes events, social experiments, publications and communities around the collective and diverse investigation of performance as a communication system. Her projects are often site-specific, where site could be situation (e.g. an audition, a theft), genre (pornography, film), or institution (academia, publishing). Recent performance projects include Worman (2012, Prelude Festival, NYC), I Am Not Everything That Is Beside Me (2012, Whenever Wherever Festival, Tokyo), The Bacchae (2011, Collapsable Hole NYC), and School for Salomes (2011, Collapsable Hole, Semiospectacle). She is a founding editor at Ugly Duckling Presse, and curates their performance series, including Emergency Index (an annual compendium of performance documents), Emergency Playscripts (a series of texts highlighting issues of notation), and the Paperless Books Department. She is currently working on co-convening an independent conference to look at the theoretical affordances of performance, titled: “Theorems, Proofs, Rebuttals and Propositions: A Conference of Theoretical Theater,” scheduled for September 2013. She studied neuroscience at Barnard College, holds an MFA in theater directing from Columbia University, and is currently working toward a doctorate in Communication and Cognitive Science at UCSD.
