Tanja Woloshen is a dance artist, movement specialist, teacher, and cosmic heart snuggler. Her practice investigates butoh dance as queer embodiment, shapeshifting, and dimensions of recognition. Recent projects include performance collaborations with One Trunk Theatre ("Hamlet as Told on the Streets") for Winnipeg's and Saskatoon's Fringe Festivals, Coral Maloney (“Red Socket Spine”) for Young Lungs Dance Exchange, Inner Fish Performance Co.: "The House at the End of the Road" for Edmonton's Canoefest produced by Workshop West, plus a Soundcan Project European tour also with Inner Fish, and "Dancing with the Doctor" (aceartinc. for Sarah Anne Johnson). Her recent creations include "Encounters Of A Man Kind" (Young Lungs Dance Exchange), “Room for the Underdog” (Alternator Gallery), "gesturing between utopia" (Borders and Border Crossings Conference, and Young Lungs Dance Exchange), "Traces" (Kelowna Art Gallery instillation), "lady rhizome" (fina gallery), "Doctrine of Signatures: i. Bloodroot" (Young Lungs Dance Exchange), and "Roar, tiger of the heart and tear me open." (Buddies in Bad Times Theatre Festival: Hysteria). She has also performed in works by Melissa Monteros, Wojtek Mochniej, Cornelius Fischer-Credo, Michele Moss, Helen Walkley, Holly Bright, Chick Snipper, Radix Theatre, Hawaii's Iona Contemporary Dance Theatre, Kokoro, Andrew Milne, and Alexandra Elliott. She assistant directed for Tom Stroud, his adaptation of "A Doll's House" for The Winnipeg Fringe Festival; and for The Master Playwright: Churchill Festival, she was assistant director to Hope McIntyre for "Fen"; and to Virginie Magnat for "Dream Migrations" (UBCO). She graduated with Honours from the University of Winnipeg, and has her MFA in Performance Studies from UBC-Okanagan. She was also a sessional instructor at both Universities, teaching Advanced Movement for Actors, The Body In Performance: Eastern Traditions, and Introduction to Performance: Improvisation. She has received many grants for her dance research from Manitoba and Winnipeg Arts Councils, and UBC-Okanagan.
