About: Please tell us about your self. Some of our programs have benefits for art workers - please tell us if you are an artist and mention the most recent work/venue/space/residency where you have worked/developed your practice.
I am a NYC based choreographer committed to exploring dance/theatre in the European tradition, with an American accent. I hold an MA in dance history & choreography from the Laban Centre in London, UK. I trained in modern, ballet, Simonson jazz technique and hip hop, which inform my movement vocabulary. The goal of blending dance and theatre is to extend the expressivity of each: to give voice to the silent world of dance, and allow for greater physical expression in the verbal world of theatre.
My work is visually and emotionally oriented and seeks to examine small and intimate moments in life. My aim is to uncover the dichotomy that exists within these moments: the anxiety, but also the potential for beauty. Pina Bausch, the German choreographer, in talking about the creative process said “In the end, it's composition. What you do with things.” I enjoy the challenge of figuring out how the pieces of dance and theatre fit together, and see myself as much a director as a choreographer. My goal is to create work that is entertaining, and fosters a personal connection and visceral experience.
I have shown my work in New York, London, Denmark & Russia. In NYC, I have shown my at The Culture Project, The Tank, Triskelion, Movement Research, & at Mark Morris. My evening length work, "Last Stop: Desire," premiered in March for the Tennessee Williams/Literary Festival in New Orleans, LA, & in June, 2017, I presented 5 new works on a shared concert at Krudttønden Theatre in Copenhagen, DK. I am also an Adjunct Professor in English at CUNY & theatre critic for offoffonline.com.
