Mayu Nakaya is a New York–based contemporary dance artist from Japan. She has collaborated with artists across the United States and Japan, drawing inspiration from a wide range of creative voices. From the age of three, she trained in ballet, piano, and swimming for about ten years, and her background also includes gymnastics and capoeira, which continue to inform her movement practice.
Mayu studied contemporary dance and choreography at Tokyo Metropolitan High School of Arts and later earned her degree from the Dance Laboratory at the University of Tsukuba. She moved to New York in 2019 and trained at The Ailey School from 2019 to 2021.
Mayu is the founder of MNiverse, a creative platform dedicated to contemporary dance. She believes that one of the art form’s most powerful potentials lies in the moments of resonance that emerge between performers and audiences through live physical expression. In these moments, the constraints of everyday reality can briefly dissolve, allowing us to reconnect with a fundamental sense of shared human presence. MNiverse was created with hope in this possibility and continues to explore it through its activities.
