Mayu Nakaya (she/her)
is a New York based contemporary dance artist from Japan. She has worked with Obremski/Works, Drye Marinaro Dance Company, Helen Simoneau Danse, SAXYN Dance Works, Li Chiao-Ping Dance (Wisconsin), Rogue Wave with Catherine Messina, Six Degrees Dance, One Day Dance, sarAika Movement Collective, Faustine Lavie Dance Project, iKADA Contemporary Dance Company, and Yoshito Sakuraba.
She began ballet, swimming, and piano at the age of three, and later expanded her movement vocabulary through capoeira and gymnastics. She learned contemporary dance at Tokyo Metropolitan High School of the Arts, and University of Tsukuba | Physical Education, where she gained experience in self-produced shows and national competitions while developing her choreographic practice.
From 2016 to 2019, she presented her choreographic works at competitions across Japan and in South Korea, receiving several awards as both a dancer and choreographer. After moving to New York in 2019, she continued her training at The Ailey School (2019–2021).
Her choreographic works have been presented at festivals in New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Japan.
Inspired by the many artists she has encountered, Mayu’s dance continues to evolve. She is committed to both dynamic physicality and refined attention to detail, striving for a quality of movement that is powerful yet sensitive.
Mayu is deeply drawn to the power of contemporary dance to create moments in which both performers and audiences are emotionally moved—moments that can transcend boundaries of race, gender, and identity. Driven by a desire to share this experience with a wider audience, she continues her creative practice through her ongoing platform, MNiverse, which serves as a space for artistic exploration and challenge.
