Native from Belgium with Cameroonian origins, Maya Balam Meyong is a dancer (currently Akram Khan Company), a creator and the artistic director of the movement-based art collective The Dancing Society.
She graduated from a BFA in dance at the PSPBB/Paris 8 University as well as from Rick Odum’s professional training and teaching programs under scholarship award. Alumnus of the Springboard Dance Montreal and of the Jacob’s Pillow Contemporary Program, she is also an awardee of the Vocatio Foundation as well as of Phil Collins’s Little Dreams Foundation. Maya strengthened her skills during several intensive programs at the Alvin Ailey and the Martha Graham Schools. She holds a bachelor in Law and Philosophy from Saint-Louis University, Belgium (thesis: “Poetics of the Invisible. For a dialogic philosophy of dance”).
Upon graduating, Maya moved to Brussels where she danced for various choreographers while starting to develop her own artistic vision, works and projects. She co-founded The Dancing Society a collective at the intersection of dance and different art forms as well as the Perpetuum Mobile, a Brussels-based international dance festival.
Moving to New York City where she danced with the CR Dance Company, Maya has been greatly influenced by Gaga as well as physical theater coupled with her personal movement research. This has confirmed her will to create movement-based works and direct productions in parallel of her performing career.
To this day, she co-created "Bombe d'amour", a female trio performed in Paris and Brussels, "Stories & Nonsense" a female duet performed in Brussels as well as "Le Temps Lisse" an ensemble work performed in NYC and Brussels (stage & public spaces). Maya directed 4 short movies, 2 of them were part of the official selection of Dance Days Chania 2024. Maya has been recently granted the support of the Leimay Foundation (USA), the CC Bruegel (Belgium) and Kultur|lx (Luxembourg) to further her new environmental research and creative project "The Undergrounds of the Possible".
Maya currently performs for the Akram Khan Company with the international tour of "The Jungle Book Reimagined". During this upcoming season, Maya will also be assisting the Luxembourgish choreographer Jil Crovisier for her new production "The Game" and will dedicate herself to the creation of "The Undergrounds of the Possible".
