Originally from Colorado, Mattie McGarey graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder in 2018 with a BA in Philosophy and a BFA in Dance. She went on to train in Ga’aton, Israel, with the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company before moving to New York in 2019, where she worked with Rennie Harris Puremovement. Mattie premiered her first evening-length work, Rubberneck, at the Yale University Cabaret in 2019, and has since created multiple dance films and solo works. Her dance film, Fits and Starts, won Best Dance Film of 2020 at the Strangelove Film Festival and was selected for screening at the 2021 festival in England. In 2023, Mattie trained with Noa Wertheim and Adi Sha’al at Vertigo Dance Company in Netiv HaLamed-Heh, Israel, and had the opportunity to connect her dance work and training with her interest in collaborating with the earth and working with found materials in movement. In 2024, she performed her solo work, Shifted, for 7 Midnights Physical Research at Arts on Site in New York and at the Intermix Choreography Festival in New Jersey. Most recently, Mattie has been working with a netting material to develop a dance for camera during a residency at Killburn Mill, MA, and went on to create Pall, a solo premiered at Arts on Site in 2025. This work has continued to shift to a large group dance which was performed in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, NY, in April 2025 titled Fabric in a Field and an expanded, evening length version performed on Rockaway Beach, Queens, NY under a 100-foot net in September 2025 titled Fabric on the Beach, which immersed beachgoers in the environment to explore themes of queerness and ecofeminism.
Mattie currently works as a personal trainer and freelance dance artist. She makes solo work and is exploring floorwork, contact improvisation, and found material art.
