Danielle Russo is a choreographer and performer based in New York City. Her choreography has been presented nationally at the American Dance Festival, Jacob's Pillow and The Yard; and internationally in Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Mexico, Panama, South Korea, Spain and Sweden.

She has worked in residence at Chez Bushwick (NYC), Nadine Laboratory for the Contemporary Arts (Brussels, Belgium), PA-F Performing Arts Forum (St. Erme, France), Independent Artists Initiative WUK (Vienna, Austria) and SILO (NYC, PA). In 2012, Russo was a grant recipient of the Foundation for Contemporary Arts to present at the 80th Anniversary Season of Jacob's Pillow and selected as one of five international emerging choreographers for the Springboard Danse Montréal Professional Project, creating two new large-scale installation performances during the three-week engagement. Also in 2012, she was selected to represent the United States alongside distinguished choreographer John Jasperse at the inaugural PRISMA Festival de Danza Contemporánea in Panama. Following in 2013, she presented her multimedia solo work with Jin-Wen Yu at the World Dance Alliance assembly in Canada.

Russo has been presented locally by organizations and venues such as the Ace Hotel, American Dance Guild, Armory Arts Week, BAAD!, Julian Schnabel’s Casa del Popolo, Center for Performance Research, former Dance New Amsterdam, Dancenow, Gowanus Art + Production, HERE Arts Center, La MaMa, The Tank, Triskelion Arts Center, Wave Rising and WAX, to name a few. She is a recipient of a BFA in Dance and a BA in Anthropology from New York University (Tisch School of the Arts), and a MFA in Dance from Hollins University/American Dance Festival where she attended on fellowship. Outside of her own creative endeavors, she performs with The Metropolitan Opera.

ARTIST STATEMENT: I am a choreographer that constructs conceptual performances for unconventional formats and spaces. My work is culturally prompted; dually conscious and curious of the cumulative cultural identities, politics, economies that reveal and orient the body as an impermanent yet historical object of analysis. Although dance is my primary medium, the result is multidisciplinary and nonconformist. I craft sensoriums; “stages” that extend their arms and hug the audience in such a way that the dance contains them. My aesthetic and methodology are rooted in an ongoing study of intimacy: the intimate body versus intimate space. My practice, whether whole or in part, has integrated public space with an intent of heightening awareness and response to the subtle sensations that anchor the intimate experience. As a result, I have installed immersive performances in surreal environmental conditions either amplified or augmented by my own doing: parlors flooded by 450,000 white roses, cement pillars suspending bodies with industrial cellophane, foyers recarpeted in inexhaustible bubble wrap, the occupation of water concourses, the spoon-feeding of German chocolate cake to a string of strangers, so on and so forth. These projects are embedded in a tender curiosity of the theatrical transcendence of the seen body and trends of merit stemming from the simplicity of being exposed. My objective is to create a safe space that reinforces and respects audience agency, mobility and consent in the hope of establishing an honest exchange of vulnerable time and space.
