Amelia, originally from the Midwest, is a dance performer and maker based in NYC. She developed a love for the form from her mother, also a dancer.
Amelia has been a Chashama ChaNorth Artist in Residence, Chez Bushwick Artist in Residence, and Associate Artist studying under Deborah Hay at Atlantic Center for the Arts. She has presented work at the Contemporary Arts Center (Cincinnati, Ohio), Lubov Gallery (NYC), Chez Bushwick (Brooklyn), CPR (Brooklyn), School of Contemporary Dance and Thought (Northampton, MA), and other spaces throughout the US and France.
She has performed for Alexis Zaccarello (NYC), Pheobe Berglund (NYC), Juli Brandano (NYC) and Christine Bonansea Company (NYC/Berlin).
She makes dances with her best friend Leah Fournier under their imaginary company name, Middle Space Dance. Amelia is currently a Performance Project Fellow at University Settlement in Manhattan.
I make dances because I believe in the power of creating spaces for inclusivity and dialogue, both verbal and nonverbal, around the human condition. I believe in the potential for movement to invite in empathy and I am constantly in awe of the beauty that is born out of this act of sharing. Dance is my daily ritual and it continues to keep me open.
Within my creative work I inhabit nonlinear process, not fixed on generating product. I am interested in unfolding the archives that live in my body as a means for inquiry, while simultaneously staying receptive to those around me. I often perform in my own work and recognize the container molded by my narrative, expanding upon the many histories, both past and alive, of those who I carry, and invite, into the room.
