Aika Takeshima (she/her) is a contemporary dance artist, instructor, DEI practitioner, and certified yoga teacher originally from Japan, with over 15 years of experience teaching and performing in both Japan and New York City. She is the co-founder of sarAika movement collective, a multidisciplinary dance company known for its physically rich movement language and commitment to social impact.
Aika specializes in contemporary dance rooted in dynamic floorwork, anatomical intelligence, and spine-initiated movement. Drawing from her background in street dance, ballet, and somatic practices, her classes emphasize joint mobility, efficiency over force, and full-body integration—empowering dancers to move with greater clarity, flow, and intention.
Her teaching is informed by a deep commitment to both technical rigor and inclusive pedagogy, incorporating principles of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) to foster thoughtful, expansive learning environments. Students can expect a challenging, research-driven class that bridges physicality, creativity, and self-awareness.
Aika’s choreographic and performance work has been featured at Lincoln Center, Judson Church, New York City Center, Movement Research, HERE Arts Center, and internationally in Sweden, Italy, and Japan. She currently performs with Danse Theatre Surreality, and appears as a guest dancer with Accented Projects and Miho Ryu.
