Performance Art / Interdisciplinary Artist/Scholar [Wilding, Wright] The
Performance Art Department of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago
(SAIC)seeks an exceptional and versatile artist/scholar working and
exhibiting in performance practices, for a senior level tenured or
tenure-track teaching position who will chair the department on a rotating
basis. Performative practices are at the forefront of contemporary art,
crossing boundaries between multiple disciplines and offering a broad range
of aesthetic, conceptual, critical, and experiential possibilities. SAIC's
unique Performance department approaches performance as a vibrant,
contemporary art field that integrates diverse artistic practices, research,
and theory. We desire a dynamic and experimental colleague with excellent
conceptual, critical, theoretical and performative skills and experience,
able to teach a broad range of theory/practice classes at all levels within
an interdisciplinary art school.
The department currently has 4 full-time faculty and 6 part-time faculty who
offer20 courses each year, and work tutorially with 20 MFA students.
Responsibilities
Duties include advising with graduate students in a tutorial environment,
and teaching graduate and undergraduate studio and seminar classes in
performance studies and practice in the School's Performance Art department.
Tenure track faculty also participate in Faculty governance at the School.
The position begins August 2011. Rank and salary are competitive with peer
institutions, and are commensurate with quality of scholarship or practice,
extent of teaching experience, and current professional standing. Full-time
faculty are awarded a twelve-month contract with full benefits and
retirement plan.
The Chair will demonstrate a proven ability to administrate an academic
department, to provide leadership, and to communicate effectively with a
diverse group of people. S/he will provide leadership within the department
in curriculum, faculty appointments, teaching assignments, facilities,
institutional planning, and day-to-day operations through regular meetings
with School administrators and departmental faculty and staff. The Chair
teaches a reduced load of courses within the department.
Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to teach both theory and
practice; to participate in curricular initiatives and strategic planning;
and to advise undergraduate and graduate students in a fine arts context.
Qualifications
The department seeks an experienced, accomplished
artist/practitioner/theorist with a strong national/international profile
who is well versed in the theory, history and concepts of contemporary
performance studies. In a small department, versatility rather than
specialization is preferred, and we are interested in applicants who have a
good working knowledge of digital media and web-based and interactive
practices. Familiarity with contemporary movement research and body-work
practices are an asset. Five years or more of teaching and academic
administrative experience, and ability and interest in chairing the
Department are highly desirable, as is a demonstrated engagement with
experimental performance pedagogy, theory, and practice.
Candidates should hold an appropriate terminal degree--preferably an MFA, or
PhD (Performance Studies) with MA/MFA in visual arts and/or performance art
practices. Applicants with international and intercultural backgrounds are
