a workshop with
Daria Faïn &
Susan Mar Landau
This intensive weekend workshop, taught collaboratively by Daria Faïn and Susan Mar Landau, will provide participants with a practical and interdisciplinary exploration of the role of observation in the making and "reading" of performance.
Over the course of the workshop, though the use of improvisational and compositional approaches, we will explore both the critical and generative role of observation in the making of “live art”. We will address observation as an investigative method that takes as its subject the full spectrum of sources that might inform the development of an artist’s work. Through this process participants will be given the opportunity to question and expand their ideas about the relationship between perception, representation, and meaning as it pertains to their own making and understanding of performance.
Towards this aim we will draw reference from texts by Gertrude Stein and Helene Cixous, as well as possible others. We will look to these works as tools in our conversation on the role of observation within the artistic process. Individually, participants will be supported in identifying and understanding their own specific subjects of observation and how these might inform their work. Participants will have the opportunity to present their own performance work and research, as together we examine the role that observation can play in clarifying and strengthening the intentionality of ones process and finished works.
