Curated by Martha Wilson

My Show:
The journey from Cuba by water is an exodus of epic dimensions that takes voyagers from one world and way of life to another. And The Sea Will Talk To You links the symbolic and political significance of that emigration with the actual physical experience of succumbing to an encounter that is both sublime and terrifying.

Sights and Sounds:
The voices of exiles recounting a treacherous journey; sun-baked hallucinations; the murmur of the Caribbean Sea, mingled with poetic evocations of being adrift.

Current (artistic) obsession:
The Cuban Revolution as one of the most seductive and potent political images of the 20th century.

My art is inspired by:
The extraordinary ways that people respond to adversity and face incredible challenges in life.

Performance art in 2012 means:
So many different things these days, but I think what unites all these points of view is an awareness of the transformative potential of human encounters in real time and space.

As a place of encounter, the theater allows us to:
Experience the intensity of human presence.

I most want my art to:
Create a space for thought about difficult aspects of our world.
