Puzzle Reflection:

For some reason this was such a challenging task for me, on multiple levels. First of all I think it was hard for me to stay true to the creation of souly action and reaciton movement.
For some reason this was such a challenging task for me, on multiple levels. First of all I think it was hard for me to stay true to the creation of souly action and reaciton movement. I wanted to do moment in the duet that involved both parties initiation. Also I had trouble keeping true to the idea of actually fitting together like a puzzle. Especially during the transitions. But probably the most challenging of all was remembering the duet for the following week. Next time I will film this because it would have been helpful to have done so. Plus sent over it a couple more times in the final form. I was great to see what everyone else came up with. I actually erally enjoyed the Trios. Since I am doing this so late. The layer of sound really gave this exercise a new dimension and I feel like we can take this in a good direction.
Reflection of the Retreat by Emily Smithtag:conectom.leimay.org,2015-07-27:5831649:BlogPost:632222015-07-27T05:56:08.000ZEmily Smithhttp://conectom.leimay.org/profile/EmilySmith

Reflection on the Retreat

I thoroughly enjoyed the retreat. It was so great being able to have the time and the space to focus on one task instead of trying to multitask, Job, Life, Family Friends, Roomates, and the multiple other projects we are all working on.
I thoroughly enjoyed the retreat. It was so great being able to have the time and the space to focus on one task instead of trying to multitask, Job, Life, Family Friends, Roomates, and the multiple other projects we are all working on. We could all pour our energy and creativity into souly being dancers for leimay. It was also awesome to have the time to consistantly train and challenge our bodies. I noticed a vast change in myself physically throughout the retreat. For it is rare that we have so much consistant time to devote to our craft as dancers. I feel like we had a great group energy and that we were ready and willing and excited to face the challenges of creating.

Also it was so good for the soul to be surrounded by trees and mountains, and to be eating fresh vegetables from the garden. I was so excited to be surrounded by sounds that were NOT those of the hustle and bustel of the city! It was incredibly soothing and healing to hear spring peepers and crickets at night. Also to be breathing fresh air and not the polluted air of the city.

Furthermore it was really exciting to actually see all the elements of the piece coming together, both the movement and the visual part of it, with the projectors and the smoke, with the sound. All of these elements in the room at once were very stimulating and inspiring creatively. I enjoyed stepping out of the work for a moment and seeing the how awesome everyone lookeed. And seeing from the outside how things were coming together. It was rewarding to be researching so consistantly certain scenes and to be building them everyday.

Next retreat would be awesome if it were two weeks instead of one. But it was still awesome to have the one week!

I had an amazing time on the retreat!
Communications Between Cells: (Very Important)tag:conectom.leimay.org,2015-05-06:5831649:BlogPost:616072015-05-06T23:30:00.000ZEmily Smithhttp://conectom.leimay.org/profile/EmilySmith

So I basically just wanted to mention how awesome and complicated and important cell communication was. That a billions of individual cells have to find a way to be self contained and yet still have lucid communication with eachother near and far. Which allows muscles to contract, electricity to go through our neurons, hormones to regulate our bodies, cells to divide or self destruct, cells to express certain genes, and billions of more processes. They do this on several different levels. They may use direct communication where charged molecules or proteins actually pass from one cell to another through cell junctions (connections). Or maybe they do this through signal transduction pathways which involve dozens of proteins and the signal attaches to a receptor on the surface of the membrane which causes it to change shape and then that causes a series of chain reactions inside of the cell carrying the signal. There are thousand and thousand different tranduction pathways! Many of which we don't know about. It is amazing....Check it out

Border are created for organization, for protection, for control, to simplify understanding. Borders are indicative in how people create identity, for example this is where I end and YOU begin. Borders can create something like barriers they can be indicative of a beginning and an ending, they can be an illusion. People create borders based on a myriad of different reasons. It's almost a human instinct. Borders can even be created within oneself, for everyone is made of a multiplicity of identities, this can be true in people who have multiple points of origin and who have multiple backgrounds. Backgrounds may include a sense of place and culture where you were born and where you great up and where you landed and where home for you now. Maybe home exists in multiple continents. OR Backgrounds may include different schools of thought that you base your belief systems, you taking a bit of each as your identity. It is interesting for me to navigate the borders of public spaces. Borders that indicate my space and your space, how much respect do I give to your space. Sometimes in trying to respect your space my intentions are misread, I come off as cold, or a snob, or I am trying so much to respect your space you think that I am not even acknowledging it!! But the truth is I am acknowledging your space so much that I have given up even my imposing right of acknowledgment for some how this seemed to me to show you more respect and agency. The spaces of casual street crossings are so loaded with borders. Sometimes I think we start to project our own borders on other people. We assume borders where there are not and in doing so build more borders stronger and thicker and more impenetrable. It not easy to navigate unspoken borders, created out of thin air, who's infrastructure is supported by 1000 of years of creation.
