Lucy Kerr Movement Arts; OTHER Dance Theater
Lucy Kerr is a choreographer, writer, dancer, filmmaker, and interdisciplinary artist. Lucy graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and received a B.A. in Theater and Dance and a B.A. in Philosophy. As an emerging scholar of Continental Philosophy and Dance/Performance Studies, Lucy writes interdisciplinary academic works as well as process-based creative pieces. Her undergraduate written thesis, Recognizing Possibility: Intersections of Disability, Contemporary Dance, and Social Philosophy garnered her the grand prize of the 2014 Co-op/George H. Mitchell Awards for Academic Excellence, which is the highest honor awarded to an undergraduate at the University of Texas. Lucy's artistic work is inspired by the wonder, tragedy, and difficulties of being a person in the world, constantly dealing with the tensions of being a part of time-existing in a social situation and approaching decay, while also having freedom and imagination. Her research includes ancient texts, existentialism, namely Heidegger, Nietzsche, Beauvoir, and Sartre, social and critical theory, feminism, disability studies, and psychoanalysis. As the artistic director of a mixed-ability collective, OTHER Dance Theater, from Fall 2012 to Spring 2014, Lucy created socially-conscious works that advocated for equality and disability awareness. As a Fellow of CAVE-LEIMAY for the 2014-2015 year, Lucy is currently creating solo and group installation and performance works as well as digital and 16mm films.

ESSAY// where do we begin?: Thoughts on Absence

Posted on May 7, 2017 at 11:00pm 0 Comments

This past February I travelled to Texas with my company of dancers to present a few different pieces. We performed 3 film and performance works in Houston and a performance piece in Austin at a gallery. One of our pieces performed in Houston was titled ‘while you were away,’ and explores absence. In ‘while you were away,’ there is film that mirrors the dancers on stage, at times it mirrors them exactly and at times it reflects what they are not and what they could be, what it…

LOOK FOR ME (2016, 16mm) by Lucy Kerr

I am writing this article in response to some questions I’ve been asked recently: “what keeps you so disciplined,” and “how do you stay so focused on your work” and in general just questions regarding how to get…

ESSAY// In A Moment

Posted on July 1, 2016 at 9:30pm 0 Comments

In this next series of writings I am revisiting last year’s research into Nietzsche’s doctrine of Eternal Recurrence, exploring what it might feel like to experience a moment. On a linear view of time, a view ingrained in the Western world and deriving from a Christian worldview, our perspective toward time is viewed as sequential moments leading to some kind of destination or ending. Each one building consequences upon another. Nietzsche rebelled against…
