December 12 - 20, 2017
Leitring bei Leibnitz, Austria

If you are a practicing director at the start of your career or feel the need to refresh and refill your directing arsenal, IUGTE intensives offer a great chance to improve skills, to find new international network opportunities and collaboration. Share and exchange your ideas with colleagues from different parts of the world, gain new helpful tools and professional tips under the competent guidance of IUGTE experts.

IUGTE Directing intensives open the door towards unique professional development opportunities for directors - participation in collaboration projects and performance productions with professional actors at repertory theatres.

The workshop is open to practicing theatre directors working in various genres, techniques and styles interested to acquire reliable director's toolkit to create contemporary professional productions.

Ostrenko Method will introduce some of the effective techniques and approaches towards contemporary performance practice in the context and the circumstances of the short rehearsal time and multicultural aspect of creative team.

The programme includes the intensive practical training, lectures and discussions with the theatre director and teacher Sergei Ostrenko and the programme of IUGTE annual International Conference with performing arts teachers from different countries.

The training is designed as the multidisciplinary intensive lab with participation and practice together with performers from different techniques and countries. Multidisciplinarity and multiculturality is one of the most important priciples of IUGTE programs. In real life in professional practice directors always have to work and collaborate in a team of specialists. This means the ability to establish effective relationships with all colleagues involved in a production. This requires mutual understanding and particular art in today's changing world. Thus, IUGTE programs for directors provide a unique opportunity to practice in groups with performers and artists from various disciplines - choreographers, dancers, actors, etc. Such practice creates a "full circle", completeness, mutual exchange and complementarity, so valuable and unique in any creative process in the world of arts.

Detailed Program see here: http://www.iugte.com/projects/director

Thea Little, choreographer, performer, music composer, musician, and director is holding an audition on Tuesday August 8 from 1-5pm. The call back will be on Thursday August 10 from 10-2pm. Make sure to be available for the call back in case you are invited. See below for set rehearsal times and performance day. Please come to the audition only if you can make those set rehearsal and performance times.

Thea is looking for dancers and performers of all genders, sexual orientations, and ethnicities to join her dance-theater/performance art/site-specific work to be performed for Chez Bushwick in Brooklyn, NY during the BOS Bushwick Open Studios. We will perform for 1-2 hours alongside 3 other choreographers that Chez Bushwick has chosen to be on a path that connects Chez Bushwick with visual art studios in Bushwick.

Dancers and performers will be exploring characterizations and facial expressions. The work investigates ambition in a satirical way. A big plus is if the performers can sing in key and hold melodies with other notes being sung. It is not necessary to be formally trained in music! Dancers and performers must be also interested in learning set choreography and song composition as well as being experienced in experimenting with movement, text, and song improvisation. There is also a possibility to continue working on this project in the future.

Thea Little's dance-theater and performance works are abstract yet they relate to the audience on a humanistic and moving level. Having an emotional connection with the audience while upholding obscurity and individualism as well as humor, zaniness, and joy are central to her work. Thea is primarily interested in and inspired by feminism, queer understanding, transcending social class and status, and interacting with the audience in a playful manner. Psychological and sociological memories and situations are often the impetus of Thea’s works. Her abstract aesthetic is paired with a meaningful anchor - expanding the personal to the universal.

Thea is inventive with movement, often arranging recognizable steps in a bizarre and unpredictable way. The influence of ballet, Cunningham, and Forsythe techniques can be perceived, and the clean lines and direct simplicity are the architectural structure of her work. This architecture is blanketed with an accepting and collaborating warmth that is experienced by the performers and palpable to the audience.

Collaborating with other artists is paramount to Thea's process. When she collaborates with dancers, visual artists, video artists, writers, musicians, and the audience, each multi-media element is as effective and influential as the other. Sets and props are often incorporated, and are often even the first thing that Thea visualizes before the movement or music is made. Thea's work often includes her performers’ stories and visceral expressions. Explorations from games and improvisations in rehearsals are often integrated into the choreography. This sets the tone for an intimate and open space where the audience is invited to enter a world of sharing and exploring.

Text is often used in a very direct and open way that is revealing yet non-theatrical. In Thea's overall works, there is a plain-statement quality, balanced with a lot of understated flair and flashes of pizzazz. Thea likes to see images, emotions, situations, and characters transform, and these developments are mysteriously emphasized without choreographic buildup. Her scenes progress very smoothly with each shift being both unexpected yet still related.

Thea enjoys composing for her dances and makes musical instruments for some of her works as well. Usually the music is supportive to the movements and overall concept and is always in equal importance to the dance and other media elements. Sometimes Thea is concerned with creating melodies and harmonies and other times with collecting sounds and turning them into rhythmic symphonies that are visually and sonically connected to the environment or story.

Recently Little directed a sculpture-dance work Control Equinox in collaboration with artist Niki Singleton presented in the Beaux Arts Court of The Brooklyn Museum, Triskelion Theater, and NYU Engineering Lobby during the BEAT Festival 2016. Since 2013, Thea has co-directed and co-produced a multi-disciplinary arts residency in Lakeville, Ct called IMAR. She is currently developing and performing projects such as Successful and Post Election Therapy as well as collaborating with various performance groups. In June, Little presented her solo Successful at the Performance Mix Festival at University Settlement. Currently a return to composing music is a focus as well.

Deborah Fisher, New York-based artist and co-founder/executive director of A Blade of Grass talks about: Her project Cityspeaks, which started as an Instagram account and has become her way of making art during downtimes—waiting for the elevator, while commuting, etc.—since those limited parameters are what she can afford time-wise with her demanding arts administrator job; how it also started by asking herself the question: "what's the riskiest thing I can do," since as an arts administrator, she saw herself as never being taking seriously as an artist by the art world again…so how am I going to take advantage of that freedom?; how A Blade of Grass happened to her while she was being an artist; the 'scarcity art world,' in which artists do anything they want except value their work, because that 'value' comes from gatekeepers and stakeholders, which leads to a huge crisis in worth and validation all the time; how to be an "un-artist," as described by one of her great influences, Allan Kaprow; how her conversations with her employer, Shelly Rubin of the Rubin Foundation, who had a lot of questions about contemporary art, led to conversations about context, and how art is integrated into everyday life, and ultimately that led to the creation of A Blade of Grass; ABOG's mission for its fellows, in a sense, as 'rehearsing for the revolution;' the realities of participating in change, and how even when accepting funding from less-than-ideal entities, grantees can engage in conversations with them about their objectives, and in so doing, ideally move the needle at least a little bit in the right direction; the analogy between politicians selling message thru stories and artists (or art and ideas people like Deborah) selling projects through their own story concepts; how the sexiness of socially-engaged art is its "selling tomorrow," something especially appealing to people how get invited to art fairs but feel excluded by the art world….and what if the conversation around cultural production was making the world a better place?; how the types of artists ABOG works with are collaborative, even cultural stakeholders; and how, while on a retreat at a Zen monastery with an alternative approach, she transitioned from "me" to "we," honoring what she came to realize was her social contract, just as she was transitioning from being a traditional artist to becoming an arts administrator and an artist who doesn't make things but sees things, as encapsulated in her Cityspeaks project.
Call for Choreography - American Dance Guild 2017 Anniversary Festivaltag:conectom.leimay.org,2017-03-20:5831649:Topic:753082017-03-20T18:14:56.883ZMichelle Uranowitzhttp://conectom.leimay.org/profile/MichelleUranowitz
