he globe are arriving for residency at CAVE, where they will participa
te in the New York Butoh Kan Training Initiative by leading introducto
ry and intensive workshops from September to November. In addition, th
ey will be performing works of their own, providing the opportunity ti
experience the aesthetic of the masters firsthand. Performances run f
rom 40 to 60 minutes in length.YUKIO WAGURIRESIDENCY PERIOD: SEPTEMBE
R 29 - OCTOBER 16Waguri was the main male dancer at Tatsumi Hijikataâ€
™s Asbestos-Kan from 1972 to 1978. From this period, he kept notes of
the words Hijikata-butoh’s co-founder-spoke while choreographing in
order to stimulate dancers movement. These words are called Butoh-fu,
a unique method for choreography. Waguri has made his own interpretati
on of these words and continues to use them as a method for his own ch
oreography and teaching. Over the past 33 years he has taught and chor
eographed around the world. He is the Artistic Director of the Kohzens
ha Butoh Company. When choreographing and teaching, his focus is on tr
ansforming oneself to become imagery rather than depicting this throug
h movement. The manner Waguri dance is often said to be as solid as cr
ystal, limp and smart as a leopard, subtle and fine as a willow; his w
orks are tightly choreographed rather than improvisational and he ofte
n employs the Butoh-fu learned from Tatsumi Hijikata. In 2004, Waguri
published a Butoh book with CD-ROM titled Butou Kaden, which has been
read worldwide and receives numerous interests among butoh dance schol
ars and practitioners as it unveils the essence of Hijikata’s Butoh
 notation and choreographic methods.October 15 and 16Time: 8:00 pmCost:
  $16 regular/ $13 CAVE Nexus member and student with ID.In addition, W
aguri will participate in an artist conversation, part of a series, le
ad by CAVE’s artistic co-director, Ximena Garnica. Each conversation
brings the audience closer to the unique creative process of the teac
hers, and creates a platform for the exchange of ideas that is vital t
o the development and evolution of butoh. All conversations are stream
ed live on the net at CAVE’s online channel: http://nexus.cavearts.
