SUMMARY:Morbid Curiostiy
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception on January 27, 5:30 - 7:30pm Exhibition
 runs from January 28, 2012 to July 8, 2012\nChicago Cultural Center\nE
xhibit Hall and Sidney Yates Gallery\n78 E. Washington Street Chicago,
Illinois 60602\n\n\n \nChicago-based art collector Richard Harris sh
owcases his vast collection of artwork in Morbid Curiosity: The Richa
rd Harris Collection. As the opening work for this exhibition, Harris
commissioned Hugo Crosthwaite to create an epic drawing. Richard Harr
is has collected, over several decades, an encyclopedic collection of
works that explore the iconography of death.  The exhibition opens on
January 28, 2012 at the Chicago Cultural Center and runs through July
  8, 2012.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\nThe exhibition includes two maj
or themes: the “War Room,” exhibiting the atrocities of war; and t
he “Kunstkammer of Death\", a modern-day ‘cabinet of curiosities
featuring representations of mortality across cultures and spiritual
traditions.  Hugo Crosthwaite's monumental drawing, Death March, wi
ll be featured in the exhibition.\n\"At first glance the drawing has t
he appearance of a festive occasion, a general mass of characters that
clump together in groups, supporting and carrying effigies of death; p
uppets and floats that resemble a South American Carnaval… or a Mexi
can Day of the Dead procession. But in closer examination, the viewer
realizes that these groups of characters that compose the puppets or f
loats are in actuality a grotesque ensemble of death figures, human an
d monstrous, that inflict uponeach other death in a variety of forms
either through war, rape, murder and disease.\"  - Hugo Crosthwaite
