SUMMARY:LEIMAY LUDUS Performance Lab with Butoh Dancer Tadashi Endo
DESCRIPTION:This Guest Teacher Lab is divided into two different modu
les. Modules can be taken separately or together.\r\n\r\nThis Guest Te
acher Lab is open to dancers, body-rooted performers, physical actors
of all levels, ages, and capabilities. Modules will explore the follo
wing elements and subjects:\r\n\r\nModule I  // Introduction to Butoh
  “ma” (12 hrs)May 3, 6pm – 10pm; May 4 & 5, 10am – 2pm\r\nThis
lab focuses on Tadashi Endo’s Butoh-ma method which aims to make th
e invisible visible. ”Ma” is a Japanese concept related to “empt
iness” and “space in-between.” It suggests an interval and a con
sciousness of place. Through these sessions, students will explore thi
s unique concept.\r\n\r\nTadashi Endo is not only teaching how to move
but also tries to give a deep view in the way of Butoh and its philos
ophy.  Concentrations of the workshop include:\r\n\r\nLetting the par
ticipants experience slowness.\r\nConcentrating on the feet as an impo
rtant organ of sight and perception.\r\nSensitivity to associated imag
es which should be manifested in movements.\r\nReaching inner emptines
 s. Out of this calmness, it is possible to gain the intensive and clea
r expression that is well-known in Butoh, Noh, and the Kabuki.\r\n\r\n
 \r\nModule II // Performance Collaboration & Public Presentation (40
 hours)May 8-10, 6pm-10pm, May 11-12 10am-2pm, & May 15-17, 6pm-10pm //
Public presentation: May 18-19 12pm-4pm\r\n\r\nIn this 40-hour module
, Tadashi aims to create a new collaborative work, based on the Butoh
“ma” theory, together with workshop participants. Participants wil
l be exposed to all aspects of making a piece, which can include costu
me making and technical preparations, and it will culminate in a publi
c presentation at a selected New York Restoration Project community ga
rden. This performance lab will take place as part of LEIMAY’s prese
nting series OUTSIGHT presented in partnership with NYRP.\r\n\r\nTUITI
