SUMMARY:Consonant Abstraction: Claude Debussy and Steve Reich // MoMA
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the MoMA exhibition Inventing Abstrac
tion, 1910–1925, Bang on a Can presents a pair of concerts that rev
eal how pioneering European composers of 100 years ago forever changed
the music in New York. Each concert pairs two composers—an early-20
th-century innovator, and a New Yorker they influenced. The music is p
erformed by alumni and faculty of the Bang on a Can Summer Music Festi
val at MASS MoCA, a program dedicated entirely to the creation, study,
and performance of the most adventurous music of our time. This eveni
ng, the first in the series, features works by Claude Debussy and Stev
e Reich. It is a rare performance of the chamber ensemble arrangement
of Debussy's landmark orchestra piecePrelude to the Afternoon of a Fau
n, which was made by one of Schoenberg's students for his private per
forming society in Vienna; plus two Reich classics, Electric Counterp
oint and Different Trains. Following the concert, Steve Reich joins
David Lang for a conversation.\nIn conjunction with the exhibition I
nventing Abstraction, 1910–1925\nTickets ($10, $8 members and corpor
ate members, $5 students, seniors and staff of other museums) can be p
urchased online or at the information desk in the main lobby or at the
film desk.\n\nFor more information visit http://conectom.leimay.org/e
