  50-year history, public perceptions and much of the current scholarly
  work assimilates Butoh to a variety of culturalist tropes and perform
 ance stereotypes. Little attention has been paid to the proliferation 
 of Butoh training and performance in Japan since the 1970s and across 
 the world since the 1980s, or to the experimentalism and openness that
  remain part of the genre’s continuing legacy. Between Experiment, F
 orm and Culturalism: Butoh in History and Contemporary Practice seeks 
 to remedy this gap by bringing together leading Butoh artists and scho
 lars from Japan and North America for a groundbreaking meeting that co
 nsiders fundamental artistic and historical issues. The three-day symp
 osium will convene an international community from disparate individua
 ls and will commence a dialog between practitioners, critics, scholars
 , and audiences.\nBetween Experiment, Form and Culturalism: Butoh in H
 istory and Contemporary Practice is funded at UCLA by the Terasaki Cen
 ter for Japanese Studies, the School of the Arts and Architecture, the
  Asia Institute, and the Center for Student Programming. Additional fu
 nding comes from the Northeast Asia Council (NEAC). The symposium is c
 o-sponsored by the Japanese Arts and Globalizations multi-campus resea
 rch group (JAG), and is hosted by the departments of History and World
  Arts and Cultures.\nCAVE media partner. Portions of the Symposium are
