SUMMARY:Aki Onda with Paul Clipson // Issue Project Room
DESCRIPTION:TWO PERFORMANCES: 4pm and 8pm\nRSVP:  http://bit.ly/UHYD
Wm\nFREE ($10 Suggested Donation)\n\nCassette musician Aki Onda coll
aborates with a San Fransisco based filmmaker Paul Clipson for his f
inal performance of the 2012 Artist-in-Residence series. Onda and Clip
son render images and sounds as if a fragmented journey of landscapes
and memories. They investigate personal, intuitive spaces, through the
ir favored technologies of Super 8mm film and cassette Walkman. Both a
rtists place significant emphasis on performance environments, where t
heir visual and sonic field recordings interact to create sensory coll
ages, born out of the subjective impressions of the audience.\nAki Ond
a is an electronic musician, composer, and visual artist. Onda was bo
rn in Japan and currently resides in New York. He is particularly know
n for his Cassette Memories project – works compiled from a “sound
diary” of field-recordings collected by Onda over a span of two dec
ades. Onda’s musical instrument of choice is the cassette Walkman. N
ot only does he capture field recordings with the Walkman, he also phy
sically manipulates multiple Walkmans with electronics in his performa
nces. In recent years, Onda often works in interdisciplinary fields an
d collaborates with filmmakers, choreographers and visual artists. He
has performed at The Kitchen (New York), Time-Based Art Festival (Port
land), ICA (London), Louvre Museum, Palais de Tokyo, Fondation Cartier
(Paris), International Film Festival Rotterdam (Rotterdam), Nam June
Paik Art Center (Seoul) and many others.\nPaul Clipson is a San Franc
isco-based filmmaker who creates Super 8mm films edited in-camera that
reveal the rhythms, energy and sensuality of light and movement. Ofte
n collaborating on live performance events with sound artists and musi
cians including Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Joshua Churchill, Gregg Kowalsky,
and Tashi Wada, Clipson utilizes multiple exposures, dissolves, and m
acro imagery to foreground unexpected visual forms. Screenings and per
formances in 2012 include engagements at the Berkeley Art Museum (Berk
eley) and Festival Play (Barcelona), and screenings at Centre Pompidou
(Paris) and Festival De Nuevo Cine Latinamericano (Havana.)\n\nFor mo
